Keeper quietly flew under the radar in October, which is quite surprising considering it’s a game centered around a lighthouse. For those who did pick it up, there’s a nice surprise in store today. Double Fine has released an update that introduces an exciting new way to experience the game’s heartwarming story.
The **Back in Black (and White)** update allows players to play through Keeper using a noir-style black-and-white filter.
“It’s kind of funny for a game that has a lot of color to decide to take that away,” said Project Lead Lee Petty in Thursday’s trailer. “We kind of just stumbled upon this solution. One of the artists on the team, Levi Ryken, was playing at home while testing the game. He desaturated his monitor, his TV, for fun and filmed it with his phone to show us. We were like, ‘That actually works really well!’ We were surprised how evocative it was. I’m a big fan of black-and-white art in games and movies, so I was like, ‘Let’s give it a shot!’”
The update includes several new features and improvements as detailed in the Steam patch notes:
– HDR Calibration
– Noir Mode
– High Contrast Mode
– Ultrawide Support (21:9 and 32:9)
– Monitor Selection in Display Settings
– Miscellaneous bug fixes
Additionally, as noted on the Double Fine X (formerly Twitter) account, the team added Ultrawide monitor support to further enhance the game’s dazzling visuals. They also introduced a new High Contrast mode to assist players with specific vision disabilities.
These additions provide players with new ways to enjoy Keeper’s beautiful and touching story, whether they want a nostalgic black-and-white experience or enhanced accessibility options. If you’ve yet to try Keeper, this update makes it an even more compelling game to explore.
