The city has been experiencing heavy rainfall continuously since Monday. The torrential rainfall has disrupted normal life in Kolkata. Numerous regions of Kolkata are under knee-deep water due to continuous overnight rain. Streets, paths, and even big plazas are inundated. Water has flooded homes in extensive areas of South and North Kolkata. Numerous homes have been swept away.
Continuous heavy rains over the past few days have severely damaged crops in Sangoba village, causing major financial distress for local farmers. Villagers have demanded that the government conduct immediate surveys (panchanamas) and provide fair compensation, taking into account both current and past flood-related damages.
In a statement on Sunday, the NDMA said a total of 5, 768 rescue operations were conducted nationwide, during which 273, 524 relief items were distributed.
