Bill Gates, the controversial Microsoft co-founder who spent more than a decade warning about the “catastrophic risks” of climate change and rising global temperatures, now says the “threat” will not lead to humanity’s demise, arguing that “experts” have been focused on the wrong issues.
As a fellow retired U. S. Air Force meteorologist, I read the recent column, “Be practical about isle climate policy” (Star-Advertiser, Island Voices, Oct. 19), with deep disappointment. Not only do I strongly disagree with its conclusions, but the author disregards the values that guided our military service: integrity first, service before self, and excellence in all we do.
Since June, 90 lives have been lost due to heavy rainfall and flood-related incidents, while 2,857 villages have reported damaged crops.
“Extremely heavy rainfall is likely over Mumbai, Thane, Raigad and Palghar districts with very intense spells in some areas. Coastal districts such as Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg, along with the ghat regions of Nashik, are also expected to witness heavy showers,” an IMD official said.
When it did not stop raining even on the eve of Navratri in Mumbai, well into the third week of September, worry was writ large for many in the city. When it poured incessantly and voluminously to flood Kolkata on Mahalaya and after, the city struggled to stay afloat.
