What to Know

Critics Consensus

Ozon may not explore his themes as fully as he should, but Young & Beautiful poses enough intriguing questions -- and features a strong enough performance from Marine Vacth -- to compensate for its frustrations.

Young & Beautiful (2013) | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Eliza Berman Bitch Media Figuring out Isabelle's character is a compelling mystery, but it would have been nice for Ozon to offer a few more clues. Jan 21, 2021 Full Review Young & Beautiful (2013) | Rotten Tomatoes (2) Michael O'Sullivan Washington Post It became clear, as the movie wore on, that Ozon isn't interested in explanations, psychological insights, lessons, judgments, diagnoses, or any of the other stuff that normally preoccupies storytellers. Rated: 3/5 Jun 12, 2014 Full Review Young & Beautiful (2013) | Rotten Tomatoes (4) Scott Nye Battleship Pretension This is not a mystery or a thriller or a twist-filled mind-bender; it's a film about the mysteries, thrills, and twists of existing in relation to other people. Mar 4, 2021 Full Review Young & Beautiful (2013) | Rotten Tomatoes (5) PJ Nabarro Patrick Nabarro In many respects, Isabelle's sexual odyssey is less about the money she procures or some sub-Freudian power game, but more about the simple matter of discovering her agency. Rated: 4/5 Nov 24, 2018 Full Review Young & Beautiful (2013) | Rotten Tomatoes (6) Steve Erickson Gay City News In any case, Young & Beautiful is more interesting once Isabelle's secret is out, when it's more about the way other people react to this prematurely jaded girl who seems to have stepped out of a Lorde song. Rated 4/5 Stars • Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review dave s While spending the summer with her family in the south of France, 17-year-old Isabelle (Marine Vacht) loses her virginity to a short-term romantic interest. Jumping ahead a few months, it is revealed that Isabelle is now a high-priced call-girl working under the pseudonym Lea, all while maintaining her studies and keeping the secret from her family. Francois Ozon's Young and Beautiful is a surprisingly tender, if not unorthodox, coming-of-age tale, featuring a strong performance from Vacht and some excellent production values. If there is one complaint it would be the fact that Ozon seems to avoid any explanation concerning the psychology or motivation behind what would cause a young girl to swing so radically from losing her virginity to prostitution, leaving the audience to draw their own conclusions. Rated 3.5/5 Stars • Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Aesthetically very pleasing, very sensual and poetically visualised movie, however the plot doesn't seem to go anywhere. It's very hard to understand the main character, but maybe the movie is about the inexplicable desire she has, maybe that's the point, the beauty and the poetry this story is trying to tell us about. Rated 2.5/5 Stars • Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review james w Starts out as a fairly typical French exploration of the crease between sex and ennui, and from there goes.... well, not very far. It takes a detached, indifferent loss of virginity into the adult world, and magnifies the boredom, intentionally, which is an important insight when cinema has a tendency to make sex a kind of mystic religion. The film has some merit as a character study: Marine Vacth is really interesting to watch, not just because of her extraordinary youthful beauty but because she conveys a great deal with a look, and understands the body language of her character.A few stylistic flourishes elevate the material: the device of "ghosts" that appear to our main character provide nice emotional punctuation. But it lacks any real wit to alleviate the tone of unremitting tedium or to deepen the characters; the movie drowns in its own pessimism.
