Fincher, the current Miss Alabama, is from Wedowee, a small town in Randolph County. She’s a dancer, an arts philanthropist, the author of a children’s book and a graduate of the University of Alabama. She’s also one of three finalists for Miss America’s Jean Bartel Social Impact Initiative Award. Fincher’s initiative is Catalyst: Arts for All, a program that aims to bring arts programming to schools throughout the country.

The winner of the Bartel scholarship award will be announced this week during the Miss America competition.

Another woman in the running for Miss America this year -- Miss Montanta 2022, Alexa Baisch -- has a tie to Alabama. She’s a graduate of the University of Alabama, with a bachelor’s degree in business management.

Let’s take a closer look at all 51 candidates for Miss America 2023. (The information below comes from the candidate pages on the Miss America website.)

What is the best advice you’ve ever received? One of my favorite college professors, Dr. Jacqueline Morgan, told me to “live a eulogy life, not a resume life.” This advice reminds me to live a life of service, impact, and fulfillment rather than simply adding accolades and accomplishments to my resume. My decision to seek adventure, serve others, spread joy, and create a lasting legacy is far more rewarding than any title or award I could receive.

What is the best advice you’ve ever received? I had a really hard time my first year of medical school. A mentor of mine, Dr. Leinicke, told me that I was making a choice to pursue this career every day that I showed up to class and that I could walk away at any time. Hearing that was the first time I felt like pursing medicine was my choice, rather than something I was trapped into doing because it was too late to change my mind. It solidified how much I truly want to be a physician and confirmed I was on the right path.

What is the best advice you’ve ever received? I’ve received so many valuable pieces of advice but one that stands out to me the most would have to be from my best friend Lauren. She told me one day when I was stressed about school and life in general: “Believe in yourself to the degree that your younger self believes in you.” I always keep that image in my mind whenever I am going after new goals or trying new things to try them in a way that would make little me proud.

When a mistake is made or something doesn’t go your way on the field, it is what you do right after that really counts. Are you hanging your head and telling yourself how you aren’t good enough? Or are you getting back up and running as fast as you can forward? This is true in life. When life knocks us down or we fail. What are you doing with the “3 seconds after?”

What is the best advice you’ve ever received? While I am unsure of the context or the exact time this was said, my mentor/best friend, Joscelyne Swift, said “do the hard things.” Those silly four words became our anthem, our catchphrase, and our motto. During my senior year of high school, I played the role “Jo” in an theater adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s novel, “Little Women.” In that play, there was a quote that encompassed perfectly what those four words implied,”I am not afraid of storms, for I am learning how to sail my ship.” It seemed at first glance like an insignificant four words, but rest assured they have motivated me more than any four words ever have.

What is the best advice you’ve ever received? Growing up, my aunt always told me “if you’re the smartest person in the room, you’re in the wrong room.” As a child, I thought that sounded ridiculous, as I strived to be the most intelligent, the most knowledgeable. Now, I know that she meant for me to be humble and to learn as much as I can from others. There are so many lessons that can only come with life experience, and people are usually willing to share if you are willing to listen. With the job of Miss Michigan, I have truly embraced this advice and I try my best to learn from people around me each and every day. I am so grateful for the opportunity to travel the state of Michigan and meet people I would never interact with otherwise, and I have gained a much more profound awareness of the world around me.

Whenever I feel apprehensive or nervous about a big decision, I always hear his voice saying this to me as a little girl. She told me “What is meant for you won’t pass you by.” After hearing those words, I have gone into all of life’s opportunities with vigor and hard work, but also carrying the peace with me that if it is meant to be it will happen and if not there is a different path or plan greater than the one, I could imagine for myself. Through moments like these, I learned the valuable skill of sticking to a commitment and realized that there is no substitute for hard work.
