2023 Jeep Wagoneer Price, Cost-to-Own, Reviews & More | Kelley Blue Book (2024)

The 2023 Jeep Wagoneer and extra-long Wagoneer L are full-size SUVs that accommodate up to eight people with ease, plus luggage. Prices start at $58,995.

The big news for 2023 is the debut of the new Wagoneer L, which is 12 inches longer than the standard Wagoneer and has a 7-inch longer wheelbase. While each of these Wagoneer configurations has the same amount of space in all three rows of seats, the L has a cavernous 44.2 cubic feet cargo room in the back. That’s nearly 16 cubic feet more than the standard Wagoneer.

For big families going off the beaten paths, the Wagoneer (and especially the Wagoneer L) will take all sorts of sports equipment while providing plenty of space in all three seating rows. If that still isn’t enough, both of these Wagoneers can tow a 10,000-pound trailer when they are equipped with the Heavy Duty Trailer Tow Package.

That towing talent is one aspect of the Wagoneer’s rugged body-on-frame construction.

Wagoneer and Wagoneer L trim levels follow the same Series I, Series II, and Series III order. Four-wheel drive (4WD) is available with each version. Driver assistance features like blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control are standard throughout.

The entry-level 2023 Wagoneer, the Series I model, continues to be powered by a mild-hybrid 5.7-liter Hemi V8 with 392 horsepower. All other Wagoneer models are powered by the new twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-6, which puts out 420 horsepower.

Besides its larger cargo compartment, the Wagoneer L has an extra benefit: a 30.5-gallon fuel tank that’s 4 gallons larger than the standard Wagoneer’s, giving the L a not-insubstantial 80 extra miles of driving range.

With regard to fuel economy, the 2023 Wagoneer Series I, the only V8-powered model, is rated by the EPA at 16 mpg city/22 mpg highway/18 mpg combined (RWD) or 15 mpg city/20 mpg highway/17 mpg combined (4WD).

When equipped with the new Hurricane inline-6, the 2023 Wagoneer is noticeably better, coming in at 17 mpg city/24 mpg highway/20 mpg combined (RWD) or 16 mpg city/23 mpg highway/19 mpg combined (4WD).

The 2023 Wagoneer L, equipped exclusively with the new 6-cylinder, is rated by the EPA at 17 mpg city/24 mpg highway/20 mpg combined (RWD) or 16 mpg city/23 mpg highway/19 mpg combined (4WD).

The more luxurious Grand Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer L SUVs have their own reviews.

2023 Jeep Wagoneer Pricing

The 2023 Jeep Wagoneer has a starting sticker price of $63,595, with the range-topping Wagoneer Series III kicking off at $74,200. But Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Pricing currently suggests paying $3,975 to $5,270 less than MSRP, depending on trim and equipment. These prices are updated weekly.

Driving the 2023 Wagoneer

The new twin-turbo 6-cylinder engine is fantastic. It’s tough to hear this smooth-running powerplant from within the Wagoneer’s 3-row cabin, but it sure can be felt. The twin turbos deliver boost in a quick and linear fashion, making this efficient new inline-6 engine feel like a big V8 with excellent torque across a wide powerband. It’s very reminiscent of Ford’s excellent EcoBoost V6, which we’ve been praising for years in the Expedition SUV. In addition to making the Wagoneer L feel quick, the Hurricane is totally relaxed on the highway, where at 70 mph it’s running well below 2,000 rpm.

We first experienced this engine in a Wagoneer L Series II Carbide model, a sharp-looking blacked-out edition with the Convenience Group and Quadra-Lift Air Suspension. While the ride quality felt a smidge on the firm side, the tradeoff was paid in the form of remarkably composed handling manners that made this 3-row SUV feel much smaller than it is on the curving mountain roads of Montana. The Wagoneer electric-assist steering has a light but not overboosted feel, and the brake pedal is similarly natural, with just the right amount of assist.

Given its composed chassis, refined new powertrain, extraordinary comfort, ability to work, and roomy top-quality cabin, the 2023 Wagoneer and Wagoneer L have become immediate contenders in a class once owned by the Chevy Tahoe and Suburban.

Handsome Interior

The moment you step inside, you can tell the company has done its homework — the interior is rich and handsome, with excellent room in all three rows.

And even though these large 3-row SUVs come with a plethora of conveniences and features, the dashboard manages to look elegant and simple, not overrun by switches and controls. While there are plenty of digital screens — including one available for the front passenger — we’ve found the environment more warm than technical.

Seating for eight is standard in the 2023 Wagoneer and Wagoneer L SUV in a 2-3-3 seating configuration. A pair of optional captain’s chairs for the second row raises the comfort level but drops the occupant count down to seven.

The Wagoneer and Wagoneer L offer the same generous headroom and legroom in all three rows. Put a 6-footer in the front row and someone of the same height will sit comfortably in the second row. Then another 6-footer can fit in the third. There are 42.7 inches of legroom in row two and 36.6 inches in row three.

Where the L excels is in cargo space; it has almost 16 cubic feet more than the standard Wagoneer. The L has 44.2 cubic feet behind its rearmost seats, 88.8 behind the second row, and 130.9 behind the front seats. The standard Wagoneer, for comparison, has 27.4, 70.8, and 116.7 cubic feet, respectively.

For comparison with two of its primary rivals, note this: The Chevy Tahoe goes from 22.5 to 122.9 cubic feet in cargo space, while the full-length Suburban ranges from 41.5 to 144.7.

Also notable: The folks at Wagoneer say the extended-length L model can accommodate a 4×8 sheet of plywood in back when both rows of seats are folded.

The rest of the Wagoneer cabin drips with luxury. Leather seating surfaces are standard at the entry level, with quality getting better with the higher trims. Eight-way power-adjustable front seats are also standard, along with memory settings on the driver’s side.

The new 2023 Wagoneer L also adds a couple of 1.8-liter storage areas for third-row passengers.

Tasteful Exterior Style

From the outside, we think the Wagoneer and extended-length Wagoneer L exude more personality than the otherwise attractive competition from Chevy and Ford.

At 19 feet long, the 2023 Wagoneer L full-size SUV has a 12-inch advantage over its non-L counterpart. Within that space is a 7-inch increase in wheelbase (the distance between the front and rear axles). Unless they are parked right next to one another, it’s hard to tell the L from the standard Wagoneer.

Keeping an eye on weight, Jeep has fashioned the Wagoneer’s hood and doors from aluminum, and used composite materials for the tailgate.

The Series I Wagoneers start out with 18-inch alloy wheels, with 20s and 22s available as you go up the trim levels. A new Carbide Edition (based on the Series II) looks especially sharp, leveraging to great effect its black wheels and grille, which are complemented by a black headliner and panoramic tri-pane sunroof. You can get a Carbide Edition Wagoneer or Wagoneer L.

Our Favorite Features and Tech

User profiles
The Wagoneer lineup allows up to five user profiles, loading individual preferences for seating, heating, and listening.

Wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto
Cable-free smartphone integration is just one standard attribute of an infotainment system that has over-the-air updates, responds to natural voice commands, offers up to 11 USB ports, and Wi-Fi for up to eight devices.

Amazon Alexa compatibility
This infotainment system can also connect with Amazon’s digital assistant (order a picnic from Whole Foods, maybe), plus Amazon Fire TV — enabling passengers to access apps, TV shows, and movies.

10.25-inch digital driver information display
Every new Wagoneer has this. Drivers can configure this digital screen to show various kinds of information, including navigation instructions.

Four-wheel drive
Not that anyone is likely to take this 3-row SUV clambering over rocks, but the Wagoneer is available with three 4WD systems of increasing sophistication. While the Wagoneer gets Quadra-Trac I and Quadra-Trac II, the Wagoneer L can be ordered with either of those plus Quadra-Drive II, which features an electronically locking rear differential.

ParkSense Automated Parking System
In vehicles of this size, an optional self-parking feature for parallel and perpendicular spaces makes a lot of sense.

Quadra-Lift Air Suspension
Part of the optional Convenience Group, this system substitutes air springs in place of conventional springs and shocks. It allows the Wagoneer to be raised for off-roading or lowered for reduced wind resistance and easier entry/exit.

New Turbo Power

The base 2023 Wagoneer, the Series I, still has a V8, but we don’t know for how long. It’s the familiar mild-hybrid 5.7-liter Hemi V8, which sends 392 horsepower to the wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission.

All other 2022 Wagoneer models are powered by the new twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-6.

Dubbed the Hurricane, this aluminum-block engine has an output of 420 horsepower and 468 lb-ft of torque. This goes through an 8-speed automatic transmission to either the rear wheels (RWD) in standard form, or to three available 4-wheel-drive (4WD) systems: Quadra-Trac I (offering full-time 4WD with no buttons to push), Quadra-Trac II (with low-range gearing), and Quadra-Drive II (which has an electronic limited-slip rear differential.) Quadra-Drive includes the following Select-Terrain driver settings: Rock, Sand/Mud, Snow, Auto, and Sport.

Note: A high-output version of this Hurricane engine, with 510 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque, is not available in the Wagoneer or Wagoneer L. It exclusively powers the more opulent Grand Wagoneer.

Regular 87-octane gasoline will work, but the folks at Wagoneer recommend 89-octane fuel for optimal performance.

5.7-liter mild-hybrid V8 (Series I Wagoneer only)
392 horsepower @ 5,600 rpm
404 lb-ft of torque @ 3,950 rpm
EPA city/highway fuel economy: 16/22 mpg (RWD), 15/20 mpg (4WD)

Hurricane 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged 6-cylinder
420 horsepower @ 5,200 rpm
468 lb-ft of torque @ 3,500 rpm
EPA city/highway fuel economy: 17/23 mpg (RWD), 16/22 mpg (4WD)

KBB Vehicle Review and Rating Methodology

Our Expert Ratings come from hours of both driving and number crunching to make sure that you choose the best car for you. We comprehensively experience and analyze every new SUV, car, truck, or minivan for sale in the U.S. and compare it to its competitors. When all that dust settles, we have our ratings.

We require new ratings every time an all-new vehicle or a new generation of an existing vehicle comes out. Additionally, we reassess those ratings when a new-generation vehicle receives a mid-cycle refresh — basically, sprucing up a car in the middle of its product cycle (typically, around the 2-3 years mark) with a minor facelift, often with updates to features and technology.

Rather than pulling random numbers out of the air or off some meaningless checklist, KBB’s editors rank a vehicle to where it belongs in its class. Before any car earns its KBB rating, it must prove itself to be better (or worse) than the other cars it’s competing against as it tries to get you to spend your money buying or leasing.

Our editors drive and live with a given vehicle. We ask all the right questions about the interior, the exterior, the engine and powertrain, the ride and handling, the features, the comfort, and of course, about the price. Does it serve the purpose for which it was built? (Whether that purpose is commuting efficiently to and from work in the city, keeping your family safe, making you feel like you’ve made it to the top — or that you’re on your way — or making you feel like you’ve finally found just the right partner for your lifestyle.)

We take each vehicle we test through the mundane — parking, lane-changing, backing up, cargo space and loading — as well as the essential — acceleration, braking, handling, interior quiet and comfort, build quality, materials quality, reliability.
