KANNAPOLIS Harris Teeter is coming back to Kannapolis. Harris Teeter is building a store at the corner of North Main Street and Loop Road, by the North Carolina Research Campus and city hall. The company announced the new complex which will be called the Market at Millstone. The complex will also include 135 townhomes and 310 apartments as well as additional retail spaces that will be filled later. The store is expected to open in the summer of 2027. “We’re excited to see that the Market at Millstone will be a mixed-use development with a full-service Harris Teeter anchoring the north end of the ‘Loop’ in Kannapolis. Having additional grocery options in our city is important as our population has doubled and diversified over the last decade,” said Irene Wong, director of economic and community development. Kannapolis has historical significance for Harris Teeter. Harris Food Store and Teeter’s Food Mart merged in 1960 to become Harris Teeter. The company’s first store with this new name opened in Kannapolis. However, the original location is no longer open, so this will be the only Harris Teeter location currently in Kannapolis. The 53, 000-square-foot location is estimated to bring in 100 to 200 retail jobs for Kannapolis. According to Harris Teeter representatives, the location is planned to be slightly larger than other Harris Teeter locations in Rowan and Cabarrus counties. The store is set to include a Starbucks, fuel center and pharmacy. It will offer pickup shopping along with a hot bar, pizza, deli and bakery. There will be expanded produce, meat and seafood departments along with a cheese island. Harris Teeter has worked with the city of Kannapolis to get this project underway. The building is still in the final design process, and they will start construction soon. “Harris Teeter is excited about the project moving forward and has appreciated the strong collaboration with the city of Kannapolis and our other community partners,” said Paige Hammer, corporate affairs manager at Harris Teeter.
