Man shot by Charlestown police officer after high-speed pursuit

A 23-year-old man remains hospitalized after being shot by a Charlestown police officer, following a high-speed pursuit and a foot chase involving a knife, according to a news release from New Hampshire State Police.

Around 8:30 p.m. on Friday, a Charlestown police officer attempted to stop a speeding vehicle that did not have a license plate. The driver, identified as Christian Paquette, sped away, leading to a pursuit that reached speeds of up to 90 miles per hour.

Paquette eventually pulled over and fled on foot. The pursuing officer caught up with him near 60 Caryl Lane, where Paquette was found holding a knife.

“Paquette refused to drop the weapon and came towards the officer,” the news release stated. “During subsequent interaction, the officer used deadly force and fired his weapon.”

Paquette was struck by gunfire and transported to a hospital. While the release did not specify the extent of his injuries or the hospital to which he was taken, it confirmed he remained hospitalized on Saturday in stable condition. There were no other occupants in Paquette’s vehicle.

Paquette has been charged with multiple offenses, though specific charges were not disclosed.

The officer involved was wearing a body-worn camera at the time of the shooting, which recorded the moments before, during, and after the incident.

The identity of the officer will remain confidential until a formal interview takes place, a process that can take up to two weeks. The New Hampshire Department of Justice is leading the ongoing investigation, with assistance from the New Hampshire State Police Major Crime Unit.
