A SEPTA Regional Rail train approaches 30th Street Station. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) recommended on October 1 that the Silverliner IV cars be removed from service after five fires broke out during service this year.

The NTSB is recommending that SEPTA suspend and replace its Silverliner IV fleet, which makes up more than half of its Regional Rail train cars, following the series of train fires throughout Pennsylvania this year.

SEPTA crews are set to perform an inspection on the 223rd and final Silverliner IV rail car on the day of the transit agency’s federally-mandated deadline, officials announced. On Friday, November 14, 2025, SEPTA General Manager Scott Sauer will speak about the final inspection. Ahead of the deadline, SEPTA canceled at least two dozen Regional Rail trains for Thursday and Friday, marking the fourth and fifth days in a row the agency made such cancellations. The cancellations impacted the Airport, Chestnut Hill West, Fox Chase, and Warminster lines, according to the agency.
