Where Winds Meet review: The best, most compelling Wuxia game in years

Where Winds Meet: The Wuxia Game Fans Have Been Waiting For

Where Winds Meet is the Wuxia game that fans worldwide have been hoping to see for years. As a fan of the Wuxia setting myself, I was thrilled to get hands-on experience with this game ahead of its launch.

What is Wuxia?

For those new to the genre, Wuxia is a style of Chinese drama set in ancient China. It often involves wild, acrobatic martial arts and centers around themes of chivalry and honor. With fantastic weapons, compelling and dramatic stories, and plenty of content beyond the main storyline, there’s so much to love about Where Winds Meet.

It has been incredibly hard to put down the game and focus on other projects. While it’s not flawless, Where Winds Meet lets players do nearly anything they want — build their own homes, get married, engage in sneaky disguise gameplay, and, of course, PVP battles.

Setting: The Turbulent Ten Kingdoms Era

Where Winds Meet immerses players into the thrilling Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms era of China — a time of chaos and political upheaval comparable to the Late Han period (famously portrayed in Romance of the Three Kingdoms).

You control a swordsman who grew up during this turbulent era and must survive while carving out your place in the world. I won’t spoil the main storyline, but expect serious emotional moments that are well worth the experience.

Will you uphold the current dynasty or protect the innocent? Will your character lean towards chivalry and kindness, or something darker? One of the best things about Where Winds Meet is the freedom it gives players to craft their own journey.

Gameplay Flexibility: MMO Elements Without the MMO

The game feels like it was intended to be an MMO but transitioned into something different. It remains a cooperative title where players can group up to battle others or explore the world together, fighting evil forces.

You can pick up careers such as Scholar or Healer, wandering the land to heal NPCs and other players alike. While powerful martial arts and movement skills are at your disposal, injuries such as broken bones or sprains require attention, or else you face debuffs that impact performance.

There are very few frustrating elements. My only annoyance was the increasing difficulty after surpassing the level cap, though I appreciated the baseline challenge. Forced level caps aren’t my favorite, but it’s not a major issue here.

Whether you want to play music mini-games, take part in wrestling matches, engage in debate, or just battle powerful enemies, Where Winds Meet offers a satisfying experience.

Combat: Easy to Learn, Hard to Master

Combat is one of the strongest features of the game. Upon starting, you choose two weapon styles, each with unique pros, cons, and special attacks. Options include swords, polearms, rope darts, fans, umbrellas, and more.

Weapons also align with different roles—DPS, Healer, or Tank—so consider your preferred playstyle if you plan on joining group content later on. Don’t worry about being locked into a single style; completing quests and missions unlocks martial arts for other weapon types, which can vary widely.

The game features a “Skill Theft” system, a mini-game that lets you learn martial or Mystic Arts you don’t initially have access to. Since each of the in-game Sects specializes in particular weapons, acquiring these skills often means venturing into unfriendly territory.

Combat Mechanics

Basic and heavy attacks form the core of combat. The heavy attack varies — for example, the Rope Dart’s heavy attack charges up, granting temporary buffs the longer it’s charged. You can also swap between your two selected weapons with stylish attack animations.

While combos are optional, learning the provided basic combos for each weapon can make combat more fluid and effective. The animations themselves are stunning.

Combining your special weapon attacks with Mystic Arts, which are universal special abilities, can turn the tide against tough enemies. Mystic Arts also have uses outside combat, including puzzle solving.

Examples include “Heavenly Snatch,” which steals items outside combat and disarms foes in battle, and “Meridian Touch,” which can hit acupressure points to heal NPCs or temporarily immobilize many enemies.

My personal favorites were the Infernal Twinblades and Rope Dart for combat, but I also enjoyed the ranged DPS and Healer styles with Umbrella and Fan weapons. Truly, there’s something here for everyone.

Parrying and Dodging

Parrying and dodging are critical for survival. However, if you’re not a fan of precise timing in combat (a hallmark of Soulslike games), you can enable Story Mode. This mode slows down pivotal parries and offers on-screen prompts, making it more accessible without sacrificing intensity.

Exploration and Activities

The world of Where Winds Meet feels alive and vibrant. Players can take part in wrestling contests, rent property, and even break the law—or have false charges filed against them!

In one memorable case, false charges forced me to find a Scholar to debate on my behalf and get the charges dropped. Alternatively, you can serve jail time or evade the authorities.

The building system is robust, allowing you to design various houses without needing to buy or rent land. However, one drawback is the inability to permanently mark your home’s location on the map.

Whether in a large city like Kaifeng or out in the wilderness, there’s always something to do: fishing contests, wild movement puzzles to appease the cats of Meow Meow Temple, or simply taking in the beautiful in-game scenery.

Beware of horse thieves — every time you summon your horse, someone might try to steal it. If successful, don’t worry; your horse is returned to the stable and can be resummoned.

You can even become a bounty hunter. Bounties range from beating up targets to using your healing and scholarly skills to help others. I once got absolutely bodied by a goose during a bounty, which perfectly fits the game’s quirky charm.

Localization Issues in Early Access

While I didn’t expect perfection in the early access build, the localization left room for improvement. For example, some quests had different names depending on whether you looked at the map or UI. Faction (Sect) names could differ between NPC dialogue and menu text, which was baffling and frustrating especially for writing guides or walkthroughs.

Additionally, some spoken dialogue didn’t exactly match the dubbing — the sentiment was similar, but the wording was inconsistent. These issues were never game-breaking but did detract somewhat from immersion.

Another confusing aspect was the presence of mini-titles for each main story quest objective, shown in the menu but nowhere else. It was unclear if these counted as separate quests or were simply flavor text.

Is Where Winds Meet Pay-to-Win?

From my several weeks of gameplay, Where Winds Meet does not appear to be pay-to-win. None of the outfits had stats, and there was no mechanism to buy power or progress faster.

All game content was accessible through gameplay. The only purchases I observed were cosmetic items, which I’m happy to support if fairly priced.

If the final release remains free from pay-to-win mechanics, this title could be a big hit among F2P players.

Visuals and Audio

Despite being a free-to-play game, Where Winds Meet is stunning. If it were a retail release, it would still look fantastic. Boss battles showcase peak design and aesthetics, from attack animations to bustling towns with lively NPCs.

The soundtrack is equally impressive, evoking the feeling of being inside an epic episode of Three Kingdoms.

Character customization is solid. One exciting feature that wasn’t functional in early access but looks promising at launch is the AI-driven character creator: you can describe your character in prompts, and the AI selects options for you. This represents the kind of AI integration I want to see in games.

Final Thoughts

Where Winds Meet offers a tragic and epic story that Wuxia fans and action RPG enthusiasts alike need to experience. The game features another smart AI usage: NPCs you can befriend and chat with in the world respond dynamically based on your input. Although this wasn’t perfect in the early access build, it’s a promising feature.

Simply existing in the world of Where Winds Meet is enjoyable. There are numerous collectibles, achievements, battles, and quests. While I didn’t complete everything, I spent countless hours immersed in the game.

I couldn’t stop playing, and I believe many others will feel the same when the game officially launches.
