Virginia pauses state food aid as partial SNAP payments are to resume amid shutdown

After weeks of uncertainty and food insecurity affecting approximately 850,000 Virginians during the nation’s longest federal government shutdown, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients appear to be on track to continue receiving a portion of their benefits—at least for now.

The federal program, also known as SNAP, assists low-income families and individuals who are unable to work by helping them afford essential food items. Despite the challenges posed by the shutdown, efforts have been made to ensure that beneficiaries do not lose access to this critical support.
