Red Wings recall exciting prospect amid brutal slump

The Detroit Red Wings are currently mired in a losing streak, having suffered recent defeats against the New York Rangers, Vegas Golden Knights, and Chicago Blackhawks. As the team looks to rebound, they have added some offensive reinforcement to bolster their lineup.

The Red Wings have recalled Nate Danielson from the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins, and he has now made his NHL debut. Danielson was selected ninth overall in the 2023 NHL Draft and has primarily spent his development time in the WHL. He also appeared in two playoff games with the Griffins during the 2023-24 postseason, although he did not register a point in those outings.

Last season in the AHL, Danielson played 71 games, scoring 12 goals and adding 27 assists. This season got off to a slow start for him due to injury, limiting him to just four AHL games in which he notched one goal and four assists. Despite the limited action, his performance was enough to earn a call-up to the NHL.

Danielson is considered one of the top-rated prospects within the Red Wings organization, and he now has NHL experience under his belt. He made his debut on Sunday against the Chicago Blackhawks, a game Detroit lost 5-1. Despite the tough result, Danielson showed promise. He recorded four shots on goal, had one missed shot, and finished the game with an even plus/minus rating.

On the ice, Danielson played 19 shifts totaling 15 minutes and 56 seconds of ice time. He was placed on the third line alongside Marco Kasper and Mason Appleton. However, with established centers like Dylan Larkin, J.T. Compher, Andrew Copp, and Michael Rasmussen typically occupying the top four center positions, Danielson’s role in the lineup remains uncertain.

To secure a long-term spot at the NHL level, Danielson will need to demonstrate consistent productivity. Alternatively, a position change to wing could provide another pathway for him to contribute regularly with the Red Wings. For now, Detroit fans will be watching closely as this young prospect continues to develop and adapt to the NHL game.
