Data Corner: how governments are supporting research security

On October 28, Research Commissioner Ekaterina Zaharieva promised to embed research security into EU law. This commitment comes at a time when numerous policy initiatives are already in place, providing a strong foundation for further development.

According to the latest STIP Compass—a joint project by the European Commission and the OECD that monitors science, technology, and innovation policies—there are currently 250 research security policies being implemented by governments and research funders across 41 countries.

Research security policies are designed to prevent foreign interference, manage risks, and ensure trust in science. They often form part of broader research integrity policy frameworks, which are tracked separately by the STIP Compass.

With this move, the EU aims to strengthen its research environment by formalizing these protections within its legal framework, thereby supporting secure and trustworthy scientific endeavors across member states.
