The Buffalo Bills have managed to stay afloat this season with a 5-2 record, holding second place in the AFC East. Their offense has generally performed well, but there are moments when it becomes stagnant. Josh Allen has consistently worked his magic on the field, but some believe that adding another offensive weapon could help the team take the next step.
Former NFL wide receiver Steve Smith is among those voices, and he recently shared his thoughts on the Bills’ receiver options, focusing particularly on Keon Coleman.
“He just doesn’t get open fast enough,” Smith said on his podcast. “Josh Allen looks his way. There’s a few times when it’s press coverage when Josh looks over there. But Josh gets off of him very fast. And some people say, ‘Well, he was open on this play, but Josh got off of him.’ Yes. That means he’s taking too long.”
When asked if he had heard Smith’s comments, Coleman appeared unfazed, according to Alaina Getzenberg of ESPN.
“Nah, no comment on that. Next question,” Coleman responded.
It might be a positive sign that Coleman isn’t dwelling on the criticism, but he could also use it as motivation to have a breakout game.
### Steve Smith Calls Out Bills’ Receivers
Smith didn’t hold back in his critiques on his podcast, emphasizing the need for the Bills to add talent at the trade deadline.
“It’s paramount. You’re gonna have to make a run for someone,” Smith said. “Because the Buffalo Bills are so desperate, they’re expecting plays made from Curtis Samuel to impact.”
It’s been difficult for the Bills to find a true No. 1 receiver since Stefon Diggs departed. Despite lacking a standout top target, Josh Allen has effectively spread the ball around, and the current receivers have stepped up when needed. If they hadn’t, Allen likely wouldn’t have posted the MVP-caliber stats he did last season.
Keon Coleman is perhaps the player with the potential to become that No. 1 receiver for Buffalo, but he hasn’t reached that level just yet. Until he does, it may be challenging for the Bills’ offense to elevate to the next tier.
