One of the most interesting sights at TwitchCon was Quantic Dream’s presence with a new game that noticeably steps outside its usual wheelhouse. *Spellcasters Chronicles* departs from the narrative-driven, single-player adventures that fans might expect from the studio. While Quantic Dream’s press release describes the title as a “team-based 3v3 action-strategy game,” make no mistake—this is very much a MOBA.
As far as MOBAs go, *Spellcasters Chronicles* delivers a fun experience. However, I couldn’t help but feel like I’ve seen this story play out before, which suggests the game faces a challenging road ahead in a crowded genre.

### Gameplay Overview
*Spellcasters Chronicles* blends third-person perspective action with the unit-summoning mechanics familiar from strategy games like *StarCraft*. Players assume the role of a Spellcaster, each specializing in a unique type of magic, and team up with two other players for 3v3 multiplayer matches.
Spellcasters are divided into three categories: Enchanters, Conquerors, and Duelists. Each category offers a distinct playstyle, allowing for varied team compositions and strategies.
Once a match begins, the game plays similarly to a traditional MOBA, with teams pushing down multiple lanes toward the enemy’s Lifestone. The ultimate goal is to destroy this core structure.

### Key Differences From Other MOBAs
One major distinction is that *Spellcasters Chronicles* does not automatically provide minions or creeps. While having waves of NPC creatures marching to enemy territory is still core to gameplay, it’s the players themselves who must summon these units by spending resources.
Summoned creatures vary in size and ability: some are small gnome-like units that swarm to seize territory by numbers, while others are larger and more capable of holding their own in battle.
Additionally, Spellcasters can move freely around the battlefield in all directions, flying through the environment due to their magical prowess. This vertical and 3D mobility makes for intense battles both against other player-controlled Spellcasters and CPU-controlled creatures.

### Strategic Depth
Players can summon units only while standing in their own territory. This mechanic forces critical decisions: should you leave your territory to aid teammates in combat, or stay safely behind to keep summoning new forces?
During my brief solo session, the gameplay felt fast-paced and engaging. My character leveled up frequently over a 15 to 20-minute match—typical for games in this genre. MOBA veterans will find the pacing familiar and accessible.
The action picked up considerably near the end of the game as Spellcasters gained more summoning resources, eventually allowing the deployment of massive Titan characters. These literal giants marched towards the enemy Lifestone, with only Spellcasters able to withstand and take them down.

### Final Impressions and Outlook
By the time the opposing Lifestone was destroyed, I enjoyed my time with Quantic Dream’s latest offering. That said, after many years covering the gaming industry, the experience felt familiar. It reminded me most of *Paragon*—Epic Games’ ill-fated attempt at a third-person action/MOBA hybrid—but it is far from the only title to try this formula.
Many similar games have struggled or failed for various reasons. This is not to say *Spellcasters Chronicles* will meet the same fate, but Quantic Dream certainly has a challenging road ahead given the competitive landscape.

### Looking Ahead: Promises and Potential
Despite the hurdles, *Spellcasters Chronicles* shows promise. The development team plans to further integrate a deck-building element to diversify gameplay even more. Additionally, a choice-driven narrative—something Quantic Dream is known for—is in the works.
The studio promises that at the end of each season, the community will collaborate on major decisions affecting both gameplay and the evolving lore. If the game can successfully implement these ideas, it could achieve something that many others in the MOBA space have not.

### Availability and Beta Sign-Up
*Spellcasters Chronicles* is currently in development and coming soon to PC. Sign-ups for the closed beta are available now on the official *Spellcasters Chronicles* website.
For fans of MOBAs looking for a fresh twist and players eager for a new Quantic Dream experience, *Spellcasters Chronicles* is definitely worth keeping an eye on.
