Off the news: Recalled chocolate milk sickens students

Even though food recalls seem to occur on a fairly regular basis, there’s good reason to take them seriously.

Case in point: Nine students at one Oahu elementary school fell ill with stomach aches and vomiting after reportedly drinking Meadow Gold chocolate milk that had recently been recalled over quality concerns.

The company voluntarily recalled about 70,000 half-pint cartons of chocolate milk late Tuesday. The affected products all have an Oct. 16 expiration date.

Unfortunately, some schools had already served the recalled milk before being notified of the recall. While a clear link between the students’ illnesses and the tainted milk is still pending investigation, caution is advised.

The recalled batch was distributed to nearly 200 schools, hospitals, and institutions across Oahu, Maui, and Kauai. Parents and caregivers should remain alert and check for the affected products.
