Former England captain Steven Gerrard has declined the opportunity to return as head coach of Scottish football club Rangers. According to Sky Sports News, the decision came after constructive talks between both parties on Thursday and Friday. Despite positive discussions, Gerrard felt it was not the right time for a comeback and opted out of continuing in the recruitment process.
**New Contenders for the Rangers Job**
So, who else is in the running? Former Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl has impressed Rangers chiefs throughout the recruitment process and remains a strong candidate. Rohl, who left Sheffield Wednesday in July, was initially approached by Rangers before they appointed Russell Martin.
Martin’s tenure lasted 123 days before he was sacked, following a 1-1 draw at Falkirk. Under Martin’s leadership, Rangers found themselves eighth in the Scottish Premiership at the time of his dismissal.
**Gerrard’s Managerial Journey So Far**
Steven Gerrard previously led Rangers to a Scottish Premiership title in 2021 before departing to manage Aston Villa. His stint at Villa was short-lived, as he was sacked in less than a year.
Following that, Gerrard took on a role at Saudi Pro League club Al Ettifaq, where he stayed for 18 months before mutually parting ways in January 2025.
**Departure from Al-Ettifaq**
Gerrard joined Al-Ettifaq in July 2023, signing a two-year contract extension in January 2024 that was set to keep him at the club until 2027. During his 18-month tenure, he managed the team in 59 matches across all competitions, recording 23 wins, 16 draws, and 20 defeats, ending with a win percentage of 39%.

While Gerrard has turned down the current Rangers role, both parties have left the door open for future possibilities. Rangers continue their search for a new head coach with candidates like Danny Rohl emerging as frontrunners.
