Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, has addressed concerns raised by popular creator MrBeast (Jimmy Donaldson) regarding the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on content creation.

At a recent Bloomberg Screentime conference, Mosseri acknowledged that AI has the potential to change who can be creative by enabling people who weren’t previously creators to produce content at a certain quality and scale. However, he also admitted that bad actors might misuse this technology for harmful purposes.

### Will AI Replicate MrBeast’s Content?

MrBeast recently warned that AI-generated videos could threaten creators’ livelihoods, describing these as “scary times” for the industry. However, Mosseri disagreed, emphasizing that most creators won’t use AI technology to replicate the elaborate productions MrBeast is known for. Instead, he believes AI will empower creators to improve both the quality and quantity of their content.

### AI’s Potential to Reduce Content Production Costs

Mosseri drew a parallel between the internet’s impact on publishing and AI’s potential to reduce the costs of content production. He explained, “What the internet did was allow almost anyone to become a publisher by reducing the cost of distributing content to essentially zero.” He added that generative AI models are poised to do something similar for producing content.

### Blurring Lines Between Organic and Synthetic Content

Mosseri also highlighted the rise of “hybrid” content on major social platforms, where creators incorporate AI into their workflow without producing fully synthetic content. He believes this trend will continue, leading to an increasing blur between organic and synthetic content in the future.

### Need for Better AI Content Labeling

Acknowledging the challenges, Mosseri admitted that Meta’s AI content labeling system requires improvement. He noted that their initial attempts to automatically label AI-generated content sometimes mistakenly flagged real content as AI-generated due to the use of tools like Adobe. Mosseri stressed that Meta has a responsibility to identify AI-generated content accurately, while also providing more context for users to make informed decisions.

### Society Needs to Adapt

Finally, Mosseri emphasized the need for society to adapt to this evolving digital landscape. He pointed out that children today must learn that just because they see a video, it doesn’t necessarily mean the events actually happened—marking a significant shift from earlier assumptions when video content was considered an authentic capture of real-world moments.

As AI continues to evolve, Mosseri’s perspective offers a nuanced view: while AI poses challenges, it also opens new doors for creativity and content innovation, rather than threatening the future of creators.
