Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Parliament Khagen Murmu sustained severe head injuries after stones were pelted at him in West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district on Monday. The incident occurred while Murmu, accompanied by other BJP leaders including local MLA Shankar Ghosh, was distributing relief materials to flood-affected residents.

### BJP Accuses TMC of Orchestrating Attack

The BJP has accused the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) of masterminding the assault on Murmu. BJP leader Amit Malviya shared videos of the attack on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “BJP MP Khagen Murmu, a respected tribal leader and two-time MP from North Malda, was attacked by TMC goons while on his way to Nagrakata.”

Malviya further criticized West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for being “missing in action” amid the ongoing crisis, adding, “Those actually helping the people are being attacked for doing relief work.”

### Devastating Floods Ravage North Bengal

North Bengal has been reeling from one of the deadliest natural disasters in recent years, with heavy rains triggering landslides, destroying bridges, and flooding cities from Darjeeling to Cooch Behar. The disaster has claimed at least 28 lives so far.

In the wake of the floods, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee questioned the effectiveness of dams in the region. She remarked, “Without dams the situation would have been better,” and attributed the worsening flood conditions to the lack of desiltation at Farakka and other barrages.

### Relief Efforts and Compensation Announced

To support the affected families, Banerjee announced compensation of ₹5 lakh each for the families of victims in Nagrakata and other devastated areas. She also stated her plans to visit Hasimara and Nagrakata to assess the situation firsthand.

Highlighting the severity of the rainfall, Banerjee noted that North Bengal received 300mm of rain within 12 hours. She attributed the floods to a combination of excessive rainfall and man-made factors impacting the region.
