**India Initiates Anti-Dumping Probe into Steel Imports from China, Indonesia, and Vietnam**
New Delhi: India has launched an investigation into the alleged dumping of certain steel products imported from China, Indonesia, and Vietnam, following a complaint filed by domestic industry players.
The Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR), the investigative arm of the Commerce Ministry, has begun an anti-dumping probe into the import of “Cold rolled flat products of 300 and 400 series” originating from these three countries. The complaint was lodged by the Indian Stainless Steel Development Association (ISSDA) on behalf of domestic manufacturers.
According to the ISSDA, the influx of cheap imports has adversely affected the domestic industry. They have therefore requested the imposition of anti-dumping duties on these products imported from the respective nations.
In an official notification, the DGTR stated, “On the basis of the duly substantiated application by the domestic industry, and having satisfied itself on the basis of prima facie evidence submitted by the domestic industry substantiating the dumping and consequent injury to the domestic industry, the Authority hereby initiates an anti-dumping investigation into the alleged dumping.”
The investigation will assess the existence, extent, and impact of dumping. If it is confirmed that the imports have caused material injury to the domestic industry, the DGTR will recommend the imposition of anti-dumping duties on these steel products.
The final decision regarding levy imposition rests with the Finance Ministry.
The DGTR is concurrently investigating dumping allegations related to other products from China, including wallpapers, borosilicate table and kitchen glassware, and nylon. Additionally, probes are underway concerning the dumping of medical examination rubber gloves from Malaysia and Thailand.
Anti-dumping investigations are conducted globally to protect domestic industries from unfairly cheap imports. Such duties are enforced as countermeasures under the multilateral framework of the World Trade Organization (WTO), headquartered in Geneva. The objective is to promote fair trade practices and ensure a level playing field for domestic producers in comparison to foreign exporters.
India, China, Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Thailand are all members of the WTO.
India has previously imposed anti-dumping duties on various products, including from China, to counteract the impact of cheap imports.
