**India Initiates Anti-Dumping Probe on Steel Imports from China, Indonesia, and Vietnam**
*New Delhi:* India has launched an investigation into the alleged dumping of certain steel products imported from China, Indonesia, and Vietnam, following a complaint filed by domestic industry players.
The Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR), the investigative arm of the Commerce Ministry, has initiated an anti-dumping probe concerning the import of “Cold rolled flat products of 300 and 400 series” from these three countries.
The complaint was filed by the Indian Stainless Steel Development Association (ISSDA) on behalf of domestic manufacturers. The association has alleged that the dumping of these steel products has adversely affected the domestic industry. Consequently, they have requested the imposition of anti-dumping duties on imports of these goods from China, Indonesia, and Vietnam.
“In response to the duly substantiated application by the domestic industry, and having satisfied itself on the basis of prima facie evidence submitted substantiating dumping and consequent injury to the domestic industry, the Authority hereby initiates an anti-dumping investigation,” the DGTR said in an official notification.
The DGTR will now determine the existence, degree, and impact of dumping on domestic manufacturers. If it is established that dumping has caused material injury, the DGTR will recommend imposing duties on imports of these steel products. The final decision on the levy rests with the Finance Ministry.
In addition to this steel-related probe, the DGTR is also investigating the alleged dumping of various other goods from China, including wallpapers, borosilicate table and kitchen glassware, and nylon. There is also an ongoing investigation into the dumping of medical examination rubber gloves from Malaysia and Thailand.
Anti-dumping investigations are conducted by countries to assess whether domestic industries have been harmed due to a surge in cheap imports. As a countermeasure, duties are imposed under the multilateral framework of the Geneva-based World Trade Organization (WTO). These duties aim to ensure fair trading practices and create a level playing field between domestic producers and foreign exporters.
India and the countries involved in these investigations are all members of the WTO. India has proactively imposed anti-dumping duties on several products in the past to counter cheap imports, particularly from China.
