Almost half say groceries harder to afford in new poll

(The Hill) – Nearly half of Americans say groceries are harder to afford compared to a year ago, according to a recent poll.

A new Harris/Axios Vibes survey found that 47 percent of adults believe groceries are more expensive now than they were last year. Meanwhile, 34 percent said the cost is about the same, and 19 percent feel groceries are easier to afford.

When broken down by political affiliation, the majority of Democrats (50 percent) and independents (54 percent) reported that groceries have become harder to afford. Among Republicans, opinions were more divided: 34 percent said groceries are harder to afford, 37 percent said the cost is about the same, and 28 percent said groceries are easier to afford.

The poll also revealed mixed feelings about President Trump’s impact on the economy. Less than half of respondents (47 percent) said his administration has had a positive effect. However, about eight in 10 Americans believe President Trump has “significant influence” over the economy.

In response to the poll, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt stated, “President Trump recognizes he inherited the worst inflation crisis in a generation from Joe Biden, and that is why he has tasked his admin with fixing it. Grocery prices are coming down, such as egg prices which have plummeted by nearly 80 percent, and we recognize there is more work to be done.”

Regarding trade policies, less than a third of those surveyed said the president’s tariffs have benefited U.S. businesses, personal finances, and the overall economy. Additionally, 63 percent expressed concern about shortages of essential goods due to import taxes.

The Harris/Axios Vibes poll was conducted from September 11-13 among 2,093 U.S. adults, with a margin of error of 2.4 percentage points.
