Early Friday morning, a tragic accident occurred near a level crossing in Kasba town, Purnea district, Bihar, when a Vande Bharat Express train struck and killed four laborers. The incident took place around 5:00 AM between Kasba and Purnea junctions, under the jurisdiction of North Frontier Railways.
The victims, reportedly aged between 14 and 18 years, were laborers working at a makhana processing unit in Purnea. According to authorities, the group was either trying to cross the railway tracks or making social media reels when the Jogbani-Danapur Vande Bharat Express train hit them.
Munna Kumar, Station Manager at Purnea Junction, explained, “A group of youngsters was trying to cross the tracks. Because it was dark and the weather overcast, they could not notice the speeding train in time.”
One person survived the accident and is currently receiving treatment at the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in Purnea.
**Investigation Underway**
Railway authorities have launched an investigation into the incident. The Chief Public Relations Officer of Northern Frontier Railways mentioned that it is suspected the victims were making social media reels on the tracks when the accident occurred.
Purnea Member of Parliament Pappu Yadav condemned the incident, attributing it to administrative negligence. He demanded compensation of ₹20 lakh each for the families of the deceased and called for strong action against those responsible. “Those who died are from my region; they were from a Dalit family. I demand strong action be taken against those responsible,” he said.
The accident has raised safety concerns around unauthorized crossing of railway tracks, especially in poorly lit and weather-affected areas. Authorities are urged to enhance safety measures to prevent such tragic incidents in the future.
