The Congress party has strongly criticized the central government for its handling of recent protests in Ladakh, which tragically resulted in the death of an ex-serviceman.
Jairam Ramesh, Congress’s communications in-charge, identified the deceased as Tsewang Tharchin, who had bravely served at the Siachen Glacier and fought valiantly in the Kargil War. Notably, Tharchin’s father had also served in the Indian Army.
“Tsewang Tharchin, an ex-serviceman, had served at the Siachen Glacier and fought valiantly in the Kargil War. His father too had served in the Indian Army,” Ramesh wrote on X.
### Details of the Protest and Incident
Ramesh emphasized that Tharchin was “protesting peacefully” for Ladakh’s inclusion in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution when he was killed. He described the incident as a matter of “deepest anguish and outrage.”
The protests, which demanded statehood for Ladakh and inclusion under the Sixth Schedule, erupted violently last week, leading to multiple casualties. Apart from Tharchin, three other victims have been identified: Stanzin Namgyal (24), Jigmet Dorjay (25), and Rinchen Dadul (21).
### Security Measures and Current Situation
Curfew remains in force in Leh for the sixth consecutive day as tensions continue. Mobile internet services have been suspended, and prohibitory orders banning assemblies of five or more people are in place across major parts of Ladakh, including Kargil.
Over 60 individuals have been detained in connection with the protests. Among them is climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, who was detained under the National Security Act and transferred to Jodhpur jail in Rajasthan. Two councilors are also among those detained.
### Security Review Meeting
Lieutenant Governor Kavinder Gupta is set to chair a high-level meeting at Raj Bhavan on Monday to review the ongoing security situation.
The protests turned violent last Wednesday, resulting in approximately 150 injuries. The mob also set fire to the BJP office and the Ladakh Hill Council Secretariat, escalating the law and order challenges in the region.
