**Indore Congress Criticizes Steep Property Tax Hike by Municipal Corporation**
Indore (Madhya Pradesh): The City Congress has strongly criticized the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) for the sharp increase in property tax, calling the sudden hike an injustice to the people of the city.
Neelabh Shukla, spokesperson of the Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) and media coordinator of the All India Congress Committee in Assam, alleged that the IMC is persistently sending messages to citizens’ mobile phones, pressuring them to pay taxes on time. This, he said, is happening while the condition of the city continues to deteriorate.
According to Shukla, the city’s roads remain full of potholes, garbage and dust are scattered everywhere, and heavy waterlogging troubles residents during the rainy season. He also highlighted the poor state of the drainage and sewage systems. Adding to the concerns, Shukla pointed out that the drinking water supply has become unsafe, with dirty water reportedly flowing from taps.
He further alleged that corruption within the corporation is causing the wastage of people’s hard-earned money. Despite crores of rupees being spent under the “Smart City” project, Shukla said the basic facilities of Indore are far from what the term ‘smart city’ implies.
In this backdrop, the increase in property tax only adds an unnecessary burden on citizens and reflects the anti-people attitude of the BJP-led municipal corporation, he said.
Shukla urged the corporation to focus on improving the city’s conditions first. He emphasized that until problems related to roads, cleanliness, water supply, and traffic are resolved, the corporation has no moral right to increase property tax and collect it from the people.
