A video of a spectator throwing a beer at Rory McIlroy and his wife Erica has emerged on social media ahead of the US rallying for an incredible fightback during the Sunday singles at the Ryder Cup in New York.
The beer was thrown at the McIlroys amid reportedly appalling crowd behaviour at Bethpage Black, with the couple visibly turning back towards the crowd in disgust. The targeting of McIlroy continued during his singles match against world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, which the American ultimately won 1 up.
Patrons were also seen squeezing rubber ducks during McIlroy’s backswing, leading to several being ejected from the venue. These rubber ducks came from the cherry fairway fizz drink being sold on-site, each containing a rubber duck inside.
The Europeans started the day needing just two more points to retain the Ryder Cup, after Viktor Hovland withdrew from his singles match against Harris English due to a bulging disc in his neck. Both sides received half a point each, adjusting the score to 12-5 in favour of the visiting Europeans at the start of the day’s play.
However, the American team quickly made a strong comeback, winning the first three matches of the day. Cameron Young, Justin Thomas, and Xander Schauffele all secured points, narrowing the margin. Young and Thomas both sealed clutch victories with birdies on the 18th hole.
Ludvig Aberg then relieved some European pressure by defeating Patrick Cantlay 2 up, earning the visitors their first win of the day. Matt Fitzpatrick followed by tying his match with Bryson DeChambeau — who had mounted a remarkable recovery from being five down after seven holes — halving their contest and putting Europe just half a point away from retaining the Cup.
One of the standout moments of the day came from European veteran Justin Rose. The Englishman executed an incredible recovery shot from next to a grandstand on the 14th hole during his match against Cameron Young. Despite a lengthy ruling and US captain Keegan Bradley rushing over to expedite the process, Rose managed to stick the ball close to the pin and went on to win the hole.
Rose, who was three down after 12 holes, rallied to take the match to the last hole. However, a birdie from Young on the 18th hole ultimately won the first match of the day for the Americans.
In a positive development for relations between the two sides, Scottie Scheffler’s caddie, Ted Scott, posted a video on Instagram alongside European vice-captain Francesco Molinari, offering an apology for his behaviour during the previous day.
The incident occurred after Rose asked Bryson DeChambeau’s caddie Greg Bodine to move away from his line on the 15th green during Rose and Tommy Fleetwood’s four-ball victory against Scheffler and DeChambeau. Molinari intervened to diffuse tensions as arguments escalated en route to the 16th tee, leading to a heated exchange between Molinari and Scott.
With his arm around Molinari, Scott said in the video: “This guy right here has always been just a very sweet-spirited man. We had a heated moment yesterday, but what many of you don’t realise is that we got over it by the time we walked off the 16th tee. Neither one of us want to make this competition about us. We want to let the players go out there and do their thing. Ultimately, I just want to spread love and joy. It’s a great competition, it’s great fun, and this is a great man right here. So I just want to say I’m sorry.”
The pair shook hands, and Molinari added: “I appreciate you. I have huge admiration for you and I love you.”
