The recent tragic stampede at a rally organized by actor-turned-politician Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), in Karur, Tamil Nadu, has sparked an outpouring of grief and criticism. The incident, which occurred on Saturday, claimed at least 39 lives and left over 90 people injured.

Among those voicing concern is Vinodhini Vaidynathan, Vijay’s co-star from the 2014 film *Jilla*. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Vaidynathan questioned Vijay’s decision to enter politics, expressing her sorrow and confusion over the tragedy.

“I love Vijay sir, the actor. I worked with him in *Jilla*. So much love was showered upon him by the people of Tamil Nadu when he was only an actor. He was the undisputed leader of the film industry. Why oh why did he have to enter politics?” she tweeted, highlighting the deep affection fans held for Vijay during his acting career.

Vaidynathan also shared an emotional plea, acknowledging the difficult position Vijay must be in following the calamity. “My brother, I truly don’t know how you are going to handle this guilt. He is an extremely nice person at heart. The hate he is receiving now feels personal,” she added.

While she chose not to comment on Vijay’s political career or his party’s ideologies, she emphasized her belief that “he should just not have entered the arena of politics.”

In a heartfelt appeal to the public, Vaidynathan urged people to refrain from politicizing the incident. “But as a person, knowing him to be a mild-mannered, soft-spoken, kind-hearted human being, I’m sure he is truly devastated by the deaths of so many innocent people. Please don’t politicize this incident. Let us mourn the deaths of these innocent souls in deep sorrow. Let us not be consumed by hate. Please.”

The tragic event has also elicited responses from other celebrities. Actor Vishal described the stampede as “heart-wrenching,” while director Pa Ranjith called the incident “deeply shocking and pained.” Actor Arun Vijay raised questions about accountability, asking whether responsibility lies with Vijay, the government, or even those who brought children into such a massive crowd.

As the community mourns the loss of innocent lives, the call for compassion and unity grows louder amid political tensions surrounding the tragedy.
