The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, and Palghar districts starting Sunday, continuing until Monday morning. This alert has been triggered due to the forecast of extremely heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and isolated lightning.
**Current Weather and Rainfall Updates**
On Saturday, parts of Mumbai experienced moderate to heavy rainfall under a yellow alert. Colaba recorded 54mm of rain, while Santacruz received 12mm in the last 24 hours. This September, Mumbai has already accumulated 445mm of rainfall, surpassing the normal monthly average of 380mm.
Alongside the red alert zones, the IMD has issued an orange alert for several other districts including Nanded, Latur, Beed, Hingoli, Parbhani, and Dharashiv. Since September 20, incessant rains have severely affected the Marathwada region, causing widespread damage and distress to the farming community.
**Relief Measures and Government Response**
In response, the Maharashtra government is actively disbursing relief funds to farmers impacted by floods. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has assured that relief money will be provided before the upcoming Diwali festival.
Meanwhile, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray has demanded a complete loan waiver for farmers facing crop losses due to heavy rains. He has also called for a special legislative session to address the issue comprehensively.
**Disaster Preparedness and Rescue Efforts**
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) remains on high alert in Mumbai and Thane, with six teams deployed across Maharashtra for emergency relief operations. Two teams each are stationed in Solapur and Dharashiv, while Beed and Latur districts have one team each.
The IMD has cautioned about potential inundation in low-lying areas and flash floods caused by the heavy downpour over the next few days.
**Public Advisory**
Authorities have urged residents to strictly adhere to official instructions, avoid traveling to flood-prone and hazardous areas, and refrain from taking shelter under trees during thunderstorms. People are advised to take all necessary precautions to ensure their safety during this period.
Further disruptions to road, rail, air, and ferry transportation are expected as the weather system continues to impact the region.
Stay tuned for updates and prioritize safety during the ongoing heavy rainfall.
