**Mumbai: Successful E-Waste Collection and Recycling Initiative by Private Agency and BMC**
Over the past five months, a private agency in collaboration with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has successfully collected and recycled a total of 21,000 kg of e-waste. This impressive effort includes 5,000 kg collected from households, 10,000 kg from various warehouses across the city, and 6,000 kg from industrial sources.
### Launch of Dedicated E-Waste Collection System
Previously, Mumbai lacked a dedicated system for the separate collection of e-waste. To address this gap, Electro Fine Recycling Pvt. Ltd. launched a specialized collection service in May 2025. The company collects a wide range of electronic items, from mobile phones and chargers to laptops, tablets, televisions, refrigerators, earphones, and modems. Their service extends to residential societies, schools, corporate offices, government offices, small businesses, and other establishments.
### How the Collection Works
Once an establishment registers for the collection service, Electro Fine Recycling Pvt. Ltd. schedules a pickup at a convenient time. Additionally, the firm offers a token payment to establishments based on the category of e-waste being collected.
The collected electrical and electronic items are transported to two dedicated processing centers located outside the city, where the items are either processed for recycling or refurbished.
### Student Awareness and Exhibitions
In an effort to promote awareness about responsible e-waste management, the firm recently organized an exhibition at a civic-run school. The event showcased innovative student projects focused on e-waste reuse, recycling, and responsible disposal practices.
### Progress and Impact
Since the initiative’s launch, the quantity of e-waste collected has steadily increased—from approximately 5,000 kilograms in May to around 7,000 kilograms by August.
### E-Waste Collection Breakdown (As Per BMC Data)
– **General Public:** 5,353.7 kg
– **Industrial Sector:** 6,182.24 kg
– **Warehouses & Storage Facilities:** 10,040 kg
This joint effort marks a significant step forward in managing Mumbai’s electronic waste, helping reduce environmental pollution and promoting sustainable recycling practices across the city.
