Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand is expected to visit India next month as both nations work towards normalizing their relations. During the visit, she will meet with India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, sources told NDTV.
This visit marks the first high-level bilateral engagement since 2023, when diplomatic ties between Canada and India soured following Canada’s allegations of India’s involvement in the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
**Diplomatic Progress: High-Level Exchanges Resume**
The upcoming visit follows a meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney at the G7 summit in June. After their discussions, both countries restored their high commissioners to each other’s capitals, signaling a thaw in relations.
Further advancing diplomatic efforts, Canada’s National Security and Intelligence Adviser Nathalie Drouin and Deputy Foreign Minister David Morrison visited India in September, reinforcing the move towards improved bilateral cooperation.
**Arrest of Khalistani Terrorist Signals Shift**
In another indication of warming relations, Canada recently arrested Inderjit Singh Gosal, a prominent Khalistani terrorist and close aide to Sikhs for Justice founder Gurpatwant Singh Pannun. Gosal was taken into custody in Ottawa on multiple firearms-related charges.
This arrest is widely viewed as a significant departure from Canada’s earlier lenient approach to separatist groups under the pretext of freedom of speech. Officials have described the arrest as the “first visible outcome” of renewed India-Canada security cooperation.
**Addressing Security Concerns**
Canada’s intelligence agencies have acknowledged India’s long-standing concerns about Khalistani extremists operating within Canadian borders. A recent report highlighted that such groups attempt to influence Canada’s positions on key international issues.
Notably, in June, the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) officially recognized that Khalistani extremists “continue to use Canada as a base for the promotion, fundraising, or planning of violence primarily in India,” marking an important shift in Canada’s stance on this sensitive security matter.
As both countries continue efforts to mend ties, Anita Anand’s upcoming visit to India is poised to further strengthen diplomatic and security collaboration between the two nations.
