**Governor Gavin Newsom Appears on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert**

Governor Gavin Newsom appeared on *The Late Show with Stephen Colbert* last night. Notably, the show was not the most-watched late-night program Tuesday evening, following the cancellation or near cancellation of a show featuring former President Trump.
Opening the interview, Colbert quipped, “Cards on the table: You wish you were on Kimmel tonight.” Newsom responded in kind, “I wish I was on Kimmel tonight.”
This marked Newsom’s first appearance on Colbert’s show since the *Colbert Report* days, when Colbert’s satirical conservative persona often clashed with then-Mayor Gavin Newsom’s liberal views. Tuesday’s exchange, however, was notably friendlier. It gave Newsom the chance to present himself as a national figure and potential contender for the 2028 presidential race.
Colbert took a light jab at Newsom for his podcast launched earlier this year, where he engaged in conversations with conservative figures, including Charlie Kirk in the inaugural episode.
Newsom discussed his strategy of “holding a mirror” up to former President Trump with his latest Twitter tactic — posting mocking, all-caps tweets that satirize Trump’s own eccentric social media style.
Colbert joked that Newsom had accomplished something most Democrats have not — being “interesting.”

– *blackdog*: “Sounds like his mother took a lot of Tylenol.”
– *DownInFlames*: “More like we won’t win in 2028 unless we wake up. With front runners like these, they’re in big trouble.”
– *TornadoAlley3*: “NY Governor booed at Ryder Cup.”
– *FenwickBabbitt*: “The increasingly radicalized Democrats refuse to even slightly turn down the temperature. It’s clearly a party-wide strategy to gin up paranoia, hate, and terror to control their base and incite action. They seem unconcerned about stirring violence against Trump supporters, law enforcement, and others.”
– *Vision*: “This kind of absurd rhetoric killed Charlie.”
