A recent study conducted by Google’s DORA research division reveals that an overwhelming 90% of tech industry professionals are now using artificial intelligence (AI) in their daily work. Surveying 5,000 technology workers worldwide, the study highlights a significant 14% increase in AI adoption compared to last year.

This surge in AI usage comes amid ongoing debates about its impact on jobs and the broader economy. While some experts express concerns that AI might lead to higher unemployment, others are optimistic that it will open doors to new career opportunities.
### Challenges for Entry-Level Software Engineers
However, the picture is not entirely positive for entry-level software engineers. The study notes that securing entry-level positions in software engineering has become increasingly difficult. This difficulty has coincided with a wave of layoffs across the tech sector. Many companies now provide AI-powered tools for code generation and software development tasks, with prices ranging from free access to $45 per month.
### Google and the Competitive AI Landscape
Google, known for tools like Gemini Code Assist, reports that most of its teams actively integrate AI into various workflows—from documentation writing to code editing. Ryan J. Salva, who leads Google’s AI development efforts, states that the company’s software development process is currently evolving between intermediate and advanced stages of AI integration.
But Google is not alone in this race. The company faces stiff competition from major players such as Microsoft, OpenAI, Anthropic, and innovative startups like Replit and Anysphere. These companies are experiencing skyrocketing valuations as AI adoption continues to accelerate.
### Mixed Trust in AI-Generated Code
Despite widespread AI use, opinions among coders about the quality of AI-generated code remain divided. According to the survey, 46% of tech professionals “somewhat” trust AI-generated code, while 23% trust it “a little.” Only 20% of respondents said they “trust it a lot.” This reflects an ongoing cautious approach towards fully relying on AI in software development.
### Rising Unemployment Among Recent Graduates
The rise of AI tools coincides with increasing employment challenges for entry-level workers. Data from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York shows that the unemployment rate among recent computer science graduates has surpassed that of graduates in fields like art history and English. Additionally, job postings for software engineering roles on platforms such as Indeed have plummeted by 71% between February 2022 and August 2025.
