Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has expressed strong support for the early conclusion of the India-EU free trade agreement during a recent phone conversation with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Highlighting the importance of a mutually beneficial partnership, Mitsotakis urged both sides to expedite the agreement, according to a report by news agency PTI.
The discussions between the two leaders also touched upon the broader India-Greece bilateral relationship, with a focus on areas such as trade, investment, and defence. A joint statement from the Indian government noted that both Prime Ministers welcomed positive developments across multiple sectors, including technology, shipping, security, connectivity, and people-to-people ties. They reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening the strategic partnership between India and Greece.
Additionally, Prime Minister Mitsotakis conveyed Greece’s best wishes for the success of the AI Impact Summit, which India is set to host in 2026.
Last week, the 13th round of negotiations between India and the European Union for the free trade agreement took place in New Delhi. The EU stands as India’s largest trade partner, with bilateral trade in goods reaching USD 135 billion in the financial year 2023-24.
So far, the two sides have successfully concluded negotiations on 11 critical chapters of the agreement. These include customs and trade facilitation, dispute settlement, digital trade, sustainable food systems, support for small and medium-sized enterprises, competition and subsidies, and capital movements, as reported by PTI.
On a personal note, Prime Minister Mitsotakis also extended warm birthday wishes to PM Modi on September 17. The Ministry of External Affairs shared that PM Modi expressed his heartfelt appreciation for the Greek Prime Minister’s kind gesture.
With growing collaboration and dialogue, India and Greece continue to deepen their ties, paving the way for enhanced strategic and economic cooperation in the coming years.
