UN Security Council Decides Not to Lift Iran Sanctions, But Still Time to Agree on Delay
The UN Security Council has decided not to lift sanctions on Iran, citing Tehran’s failure to abide by the 2015 nuclear deal signed with world powers. The agreement was designed to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon.
Despite this decision, there remains an opportunity to negotiate a delay regarding the sanctions. The details of such an agreement are yet to be finalized as diplomatic efforts continue.
Members of the UN Security Council voted on a resolution that would have permanently lifted UN sanctions on Iran. The vote took place at the UN headquarters in New York City on September 19, 2025.
