Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday spoke with Nepal’s interim Prime Minister, Sushila Karki, expressing his condolences over the recent violence in Nepal that resulted in significant casualties.
The unrest has claimed the lives of at least 59 protesters, 10 prisoners, and three policemen. The protests initially erupted in response to the Nepalese government’s ban on popular social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram. However, they quickly escalated into a broader movement against government corruption and unemployment.
### Diplomatic Communication
PM Modi took to X (formerly Twitter) to share details of his conversation with PM Karki. He wrote:
“Had a warm conversation with Mrs. Sushila Karki, Prime Minister of the Interim Government of Nepal. Conveyed heartfelt condolences on the recent tragic loss of lives and reaffirmed India’s steadfast support for her efforts to restore peace and stability.”
He also extended warm greetings to the people of Nepal ahead of their National Day, celebrated on September 19.
### Interim Leadership and Anti-Corruption Efforts
Following the deadly protests and the resignation of former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and his ministers, Sushila Karki was appointed as Nepal’s first woman interim prime minister. Remarkably, her appointment came through an impromptu vote on Discord by young anti-corruption protesters.
Karki, a former chief justice, is well-known for her firm anti-corruption stance. During her tenure as chief justice, she presided over landmark cases, including the conviction of a sitting minister on corruption charges.
### How Protests Turned Violent
The protests, initially ignited by the government’s ban on key social media platforms, rapidly expanded into widespread demonstrations addressing corruption and unemployment. Young protesters from Generation Z took to the streets, carrying banners and chanting slogans.
Violence soon broke out as security forces resorted to live ammunition, tear gas, and batons to control the crowds. Meanwhile, rioters vandalized public property by toppling barriers, looting businesses, and setting fire to government offices and the homes of political leaders.
### Upcoming Elections
In response to the turmoil, Nepal has scheduled general elections for March 5, 2026, aiming to restore political stability and address the pressing issues raised by protesters.
