Trent McDuffie and Rams agree on richest contract ever for a cornerback

The Los Angeles Rams believe cornerback Trent McDuffie can help them secure another Super Bowl title—and they are willing to pay a premium to make it happen.

Less than a week after agreeing to a trade with the Kansas City Chiefs for McDuffie, the Rams and the cornerback have reached terms on a contract extension. According to a person with knowledge of the situation, the new deal will make McDuffie the highest-paid player at his position in the NFL. The individual requested anonymity as the trade and extension are not official until the NFL’s new league year begins on Wednesday.

The four-year extension is reportedly worth $124 million, with $100 million guaranteed, according to ESPN. This contract makes McDuffie the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history.

The Rams have a history of making record-setting deals. Former players Jared Goff, Todd Gurley, Aaron Donald, and Jalen Ramsey all signed landmark contracts during their time with the team.

McDuffie, 25, is entering the final year of his rookie contract after being selected by the Chiefs in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft. A former standout at Anaheim Servite and Bellflower St. John Bosco high schools, McDuffie earned All-Pro honors in 2023 and contributed to the Chiefs’ two recent Super Bowl victories.

In exchange for McDuffie, the Rams are sending the Chiefs a package including a first-round pick (29th overall), fifth- and sixth-round picks this year, and a seventh-round pick in 2027.

The Rams have been proactive in strengthening their secondary, which will be crucial as the organization gears up to compete in Super Bowl LXI at SoFi Stadium next February. Earlier this year, the team extended safety Quentin Lake, and recently agreed to an extension with safety Kam Curl.

On Saturday, the Rams placed cornerback Darious Williams on the reserve/retired list. Meanwhile, cornerbacks Cobie Durant, Roger McCreary, Ahkello Witherspoon, and Derion Kendrick are pending free agents. The negotiation period for representatives of unrestricted free agents to speak with other teams begins Monday.

With these moves, the Rams are clearly committed to building a secondary capable of defending the league’s elite offenses as they aim for another championship run.
