Sikeston outmatched in opening week against Farmington and Marion

Sikeston opened its season against two groups already positioned to chase postseason hardware, and the gap showed at the Field House. Farmington, coming off a 16-14 season and a Class 5 District 1 championship, controlled the game from the opening quarter and left with a 61-28 win on Monday, Nov. 24. The Lady Knights went up 14-9 after eight minutes, pushed the margin to 31-17 by halftime and stayed in command with consistent touches in the paint. Kate Jenkerson finished with 16 points and Madison Clay added 14. Sikeston was led by Peytton Wiggins with 13 points and Marlie Crook with 11. Alex Segers and Danity Ranson scored 2 apiece. Sikeston faced a Marion (Ill.) group returning most of a 21-win roster, falling 72-28 on Tuesday, Nov. 25. Marion put four players in double figures with Jakiyah Peterman at 18, Carleigh Midget at 13, Kamari Jackson at 12 and Nyanja Curry at 10. Sikeston’s scoring came from Segers with 13, Wiggins with 12, Crook with 2 and Kelly Coaker with 1. Sikeston hung with both teams for a handful of early minutes, but once the first breakdowns hit, the game turned fast. The early balance didn’t hold long enough to keep either matchup competitive past the midpoint of the opening quarter. Sikeston coach Emily Watkins said the group isn’t where it needs to be with discipline or conditioning, two areas that showed once the games stretched into longer possessions. There were pieces she liked Segers’ control with the ball, Wiggins competing on the glass, Crook finding spots inside but those pieces didn’t sync often enough to build anything sustained. What’s missing is continuity. Sikeston needs those early minutes to lead into the next stretch, not fade once the pressure picks up. “We just aren’t clicking as a team yet,” Watkins said. “I’m hoping we reach that point because there’s real potential once everything comes together.” Next up is the SEMO Conference Tournament, with Sikeston slotted at No. 6 and matched with No. 3 Kennett on Monday, Dec. 1.
