Nicholas Brendon, an actor best known for his role as a lovable underdog sidekick on the hit television series *Buffy the Vampire Slayer*, has died at the age of 54.
Brendon’s family announced his passing in a statement posted on his social media accounts on Friday. They said he died in his sleep of natural causes but did not specify where or when it happened.
Brendon famously played Xander Harris, a close friend of the lead character Buffy, on *Buffy the Vampire Slayer*, which aired from 1997 to 2003. The supernatural series, which began on the WB network before moving to UPN, followed vampire slayers led by teenager Buffy as they battled demons, werewolves, and other dark forces while navigating high school life.
Based on the movie of the same name, *Buffy the Vampire Slayer* never won many awards but has been widely cited by critics as one of the most influential television shows in history.
Sarah Michelle Gellar, who played Buffy on the show, paid tribute to Brendon on Instagram Saturday, posting a photo of the two together. “I saw you Nicky,” she wrote. “I know you are at peace, in that big rocking chair in the sky.”
In addition to his iconic role on *Buffy*, Brendon appeared on the TV show *Criminal Minds* from 2007 to 2014. He also starred alongside Bradley Cooper in the Fox sitcom *Kitchen Confidential*, an adaptation of Anthony Bourdain’s memoir, which aired for one season in 2005.
Brendon’s film credits include *Redwood* (2017), *The Nanny* (2018), and *Christmas Slasher* (2024). He was also a writer for several issues of the *Buffy* comic book series.
While Brendon was best known as an actor, his family noted in their statement that in recent years he found a new passion in painting and art. “He was passionate, sensitive, and endlessly driven to create,” they said. “Those who truly knew him understood that his art was one of the purest reflections of who he was.”
Brendon had publicly shared his health struggles, revealing in 2023 that he suffered a heart attack. He also underwent two spinal surgeries to treat cauda equina syndrome, a rare nerve compression condition that can cause pain and weakness in the lower body.
He was open about his battle with depression and appeared on two episodes of *Dr. Phil* in 2015 to discuss his struggles with alcohol, mental health, and a series of arrests related to public intoxication, vandalism, and domestic violence.
His family stated that, despite past difficulties, Brendon was on medication and treatment to manage his conditions and remained optimistic about the future.
Nicholas Brendon’s contributions to television and his creative spirit have left a lasting impact on fans and colleagues alike. He will be remembered fondly.
