PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Rihards Vavers’ 13 points off the bench led Washington State to a 67-62 victory over Portland in a West Coast Conference opener on Sunday.
Vavers shot 4 for 6 from the field, including 3 for 5 from beyond the arc, and made 2 of 3 free throws to help the Cougars (6-8). Tomas Thrastarson contributed 11 points, shooting 4 for 8 overall and 1 for 3 from three-point range, while adding six rebounds. Aaron Glass added 11 points, despite shooting just 1 of 8 from the field and missing all three of his three-point attempts, but he went 9 for 10 from the free-throw line.
For the Pilots (7-7), Joel Foxwell led with 15 points, along with six rebounds and six assists. Mikah Ballew also scored 15 points for Portland.
Washington State took a 32-23 lead into halftime, with Thrastarson scoring six points in the first half. The Cougars overcame an eight-point deficit in the second half with a 12-0 run that gave them a 49-45 lead with 5:41 remaining. Vavers scored 10 of his 13 points in the second half to help secure the victory.
