There are so many video games out there that involve world-saving high stakes. Cozy games, however, are built partly on the idea of setting that kind of pressure aside. They often focus on comforting slices of life and finding relaxation through routine.
That’s one of the main ideas behind *Beastro*, the latest title from *The Red Lantern* creators Timberline Studio, which centers on finding comfort through cooking. But it’s also about bringing comfort to those who do pick up their swords and fight.
### Meet Panko and Flambe
In *Beastro*, players take on the role of Panko, an at-times neurotic cat chef who runs the local bistro in the village of Palo Pori. He’s going about his daily routine when he encounters an injured fire god named Flambe. Panko and Flambe strike a chord almost instantly, leading to the two hanging out at Panko’s day job.
Flambe may not be all-powerful, but he has enough energy to aid Panko in the kitchen, adding a magical twist to meal preparation.
### Life Outside the Bistro
Before stepping into the kitchen, players can engage in a variety of activities around the village. You can tend to crops, explore to find fresh ingredients, or even spend some relaxing time fishing along the village pier. Different fish lead to unique dishes, and the species you catch depend on where and when — thanks to a day-night cycle that affects fish availability.
### Kitchen Gameplay
Once in the kitchen, it’s time to put those freshly gathered ingredients to work. The cooking mechanics include sliding meat around the pan to prep it properly—while avoiding grease bubbles that can burn the food.
Chopping vegetables involves rhythmic slicing, and boiling water is turned into a fun mini-game reminiscent of Pop-A-Shot basketball. When a dish is ready to cook, Flambe lights the stove using his fiery form to ensure it’s cooked just right.
### Feeding the Heroes
The meals you prepare serve to satisfy the restaurant’s customers—some of whom are heroes. This sets the stage for one of *Beastro*’s more clever narrative devices: Panko doesn’t fight; he feeds the heroes who do.
In return, these heroes spend their evenings sharing tales of their journeys with Panko. These stories come to life in the village’s Puppet Theater, where players reenact battles through deck-building turn-based combat.
### Flavorful Combat
The dishes Panko prepares throughout the day directly influence this combat system. The flavors you serve help build your deck, strengthening heroes and weakening monsters. Certain flavor combinations enable stronger attacks and powerful combos, adding a strategic layer to the cozy cooking experience.
Even if you fall in battle, the hero’s story naturally concludes, and everyone returns to bed to prepare for the next day.
### A Fresh Take on Cozy Games
*Beastro* offers a fresh and fun spin on the typical cozy game formula. While the genre is known for its comforting vibes, sometimes players crave a different flavor—and Timberline Studio seems ready to deliver.
Look for *Beastro* to launch on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S in 2026. If you’re eager to try it sooner, a demo is available now on Steam.
