LOS ANGELES — A U.S. Marine tragically died during a training exercise on Wednesday at Camp Pendleton in Southern California, military officials confirmed.
The Marine sustained fatal injuries in a “tactical vehicle mishap” that occurred in the afternoon, according to a statement from the I Marine Expeditionary Force.
He has been identified as Private First Class Tanner F. Rubio, 21, a native of Dixon, California. Rubio joined the Marine Corps in January 2025. He was trained as an infantry rifleman and assigned to the 1st Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division.
“The tragic loss of Pfc. Rubio is one felt across the 1st Marine Division,” said Maj. Gen. Thomas Savage, commanding general of the 1st Marine Division. “He will be sorely missed, but his honorable service to his country will not be forgotten. All of us at the Blue Diamond will keep him and his family in our thoughts and prayers.”
The cause of the incident is currently under investigation. Officials clarified that the death was not related to Steel Knight, an annual, large-scale training exercise that began Monday on the base.
No further details have been released at this time.
The I Marine Expeditionary Force is the largest of the three Marine expeditionary forces and is based on the coast in San Diego County.
