A woman who sued the Metropolitan Transportation Authority after being struck by a train has been awarded $81. 7 million by a jury, according to a report from Gothamist. In 2016, Luisa Janssen Harger Da Silva, a Brazilian woman, fainted while standing on the Atlantic Avenue-Barclays Center station platform and fell in front of a train, according to Gothamist. The train struck Da Silva, severing an arm and leg and leaving her permanently disabled, the outlet reports. She later sued the MTA over the incident, claiming that her injuries were preventable because the transit agency failed to install platform barriers that could keep someone from falling on the tracks, the report notes. Lawyers for Da Silva claim that during the trial, they found records that the MTA looked into installing screen doors on platforms. Some companies offered to install the screens for free if they could advertise on them, according to Gothamist. A spokesperson for the MTA told Gothamist that the agency planned to appeal the decision.
