Switzerland has spent most of Horizon Europe participating as a “third country,” able to join projects but ineligible for EU funding. Following an association agreement that was formally signed on November 10, it now appears in the data as the second most successful associated country in the EU research programme. According to figures from the European Commission, Swiss organisations have participated in Horizon Europe 2, 782 times so far. That’s 2. 3% of the total of all participation in the EU research programme, and second only to the UK, another recently associated nation, with 4. 9%. Swiss organisations have been most active in big collaborative research projects, with 1, 839 participations in Horizon Europe’s Pillar 2. Here, the most popular topics have been climate, energy and mobility (558 participations) and digital and industry (483 participations).
