For decades, the term “crazy cat lady” has been thrown around as an insult. Unfortunately, it’s a sad reflection of how little progress we’ve made when it comes to the unfair and untrue stereotypes aimed at cat lovers.
Recently, a female stewardess found herself in an uncomfortable situation during a flight with her male superior. The conversation steered towards children, and when she explained that she didn’t want any, her boss reacted as if it was unheard of. He insisted she would be lonely in her old age, with only her cats to keep her company.
As if that were an insult! Many of us would be perfectly happy surrounded by the love of our feline companions as we grow older. Thankfully, she managed to get out of the situation and is now seriously considering reporting the incident to HR. And if you ask us, she absolutely should.
We guarantee that if she had been a dog lover, he would never have made such a comment. So why is it assumed that all cat lovers will end up sad, lonely, or living in cluttered homes with dozens of cats? Cats make wonderful companions. Yes, it can be easy to accumulate a few extra cats when you take in strays, but that doesn’t mean every cat owner lives amongst mountains of litter boxes.
We sincerely hope she chooses to report him. Perhaps his consequence should be learning about the incredible love and loyalty cats offer. Maybe then, he’ll realize how wrong his assumptions were—and gain a little compassion along the way.
