Flagg, Mavericks defeat Trail Blazers in OT

Dallas P. J. Washington Jr. and Cooper Flagg each scored 21 points and combined for a crucial basket late in overtime to lead the Dallas Mavericks to a 138-133 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on Sunday night.

With 1:39 remaining and Dallas holding a narrow 130-129 lead, Flagg grabbed the rebound of a missed 3-pointer by Portland’s Shaedon Sharpe and quickly delivered an outlet pass to Washington, who finished with an emphatic jam during a 6-0 Mavericks run.

Daniel Gafford contributed 20 points, including seven in overtime, and was one of seven Mavericks players to reach double figures in scoring. The win improved Dallas to 4-10, snapping a three-game losing streak.

On the Trail Blazers’ side, Shaedon Sharpe scored a season-high 36 points. However, Portland (6-7) has now lost four of their last five games. Deni Avdija added 29 points before fouling out with 1:39 left—the same moment Gafford nailed two free throws to give Dallas a 130-129 lead that held for the rest of the game.

Jerami Grant scored 26 points in his first start of the season, filling in for Jrue Holiday, who sat out due to right calf soreness.

The Mavericks were perfect in overtime, hitting all seven of their field-goal attempts—all of which were 2-pointers. Meanwhile, Portland matched a season high by grabbing 22 offensive rebounds, seven of them by Donovan Clingan, who totaled 11 rebounds. This dominance on the boards helped Portland rack up a 32-10 advantage in second-chance points.

Dallas continues to cope without Anthony Davis, who missed his ninth consecutive game with a left calf strain. The team announced before the game that the 32-year-old, 10-time All-Star will be sidelined for at least another seven to 10 days. Davis has faced multiple injuries following the controversial February 2 trade that sent Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers and has missed 31 of a possible 47 games with the Mavericks.

Notably, Davis attended the game wearing the jersey of Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love, who famously led the Packers to a 48-32 victory over the Dallas Cowboys in the 2023-24 NFL wild-card playoffs.
