Everton Eye Joshua Zirkzee Loan as January Striker Search Intensifies
Everton are expected to be among the leading suitors for Joshua Zirkzee should he be allowed to leave on loan this January, according to Sky Sports’ Rob Dorsett. The Toffees have made signing a new striker their top priority as they look to add a player of a different profile to their current frontmen, Beto and Thierno Barry.
Zirkzee is joined by Manchester United’s No.11 and Brentford’s Ivan Toney as high-profile targets on Everton’s shortlist. However, any move for Gabriel Jesus appears unlikely after Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta ruled out his departure.
Transfer Plans for January
Everton’s need for attacking reinforcements has grown increasingly urgent, with the club keen on introducing new qualities up front. According to Dorsett, both Zirkzee and Toney stand out as potential options, if either becomes available during the winter window.
Joshua Zirkzee: Situation at Manchester United
Recent weeks have seen mounting speculation regarding Zirkzee’s future. The Dutch striker has endured a frustrating start to the season under Ruben Amorim at Manchester United, making just four appearances in the first 12 Premier League matches. Notably, Zirkzee has been an unused substitute for seven games and has not played more than 10 minutes in any match since mid-September.
Manchester United’s Position
Despite Zirkzee’s desire for more playing time, Manchester United remain reluctant to sanction a mid-season exit. This decision is influenced by the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations, which will see Amad Diallo, Bryan Mbeumo, and Noussair Mazraoui depart in January. The absences of Amad and Mbeumo, in particular, could open up opportunities for Zirkzee during a busy festive period.
However, unless Zirkzee’s increased involvement extends beyond the temporary squad depletion, the forward may still seek opportunities elsewhere if his position does not improve.
Looking Ahead
Everton’s pursuit of a new striker is set to be one of the key stories of the approaching January transfer window. As they continue their search, Zirkzee’s situation at Old Trafford will be closely monitored.
