The Dallas Mavericks fired Nico Harrison as the team’s general manager on Tuesday, just nine months after the Luka Doncic trade in February. Harrison’s comments about his job security resurfaced on social media following the decision to part ways with him.
At the end of the 2024-25 NBA season, Harrison faced the media on camera for the first time since trading Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers. “I think I’ve done a really good job here,” Harrison said. “I don’t think I can be judged by the injuries this year. You have to judge the totality, from beginning to end. I think I have a really good working relationship with Patrick (Dumont). With Rick (Welts), the leadership we have is really elite. You’ll see next year when our team comes back—we’re going to be competing for a championship.”
In addition to criticism over trading Luka Doncic in his prime, Harrison was also called out for not exploring trade negotiations with teams other than the Lakers. Many believe the Mavericks could have secured a better overall package, including valuable draft assets, for such a generational talent.
Since the trade, the Mavericks have struggled with injuries and inconsistent play. Anthony Davis has appeared in only 14 games, while Kyrie Irving remains sidelined with a knee injury. Klay Thompson has faced shooting struggles, and rookie Cooper Flagg’s start at point guard has been challenging. At the time of Harrison’s firing, Dallas held a 3-8 record.
Meanwhile, Luka Doncic has thrived in Los Angeles, leading the Lakers to an 8-3 record. “Luka Magic” is averaging impressive numbers: 37.1 points, 9.4 rebounds, 9.1 assists, and 1.7 steals per game.
