Inside the Giants’ collapse that got Brian Daboll fired

Brian Daboll’s best hope at sticking around as Giants coach was rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart. However, Dart leaving Sunday’s game with a concussion marked the beginning of their latest collapse and ultimately became the final straw that led to the firing of the 50-year-old coach on Monday, midway through his fourth season at the helm.

After Dart’s exit, Russell Wilson took over under center. The Giants managed to drive down to the Bears’ 1-yard line but couldn’t punch it in. Daboll opted for a field goal, putting the Giants up 20-10 with 10:19 left in the fourth quarter.

The Giants then forced the Bears into a turnover on downs at Chicago’s 43-yard line with 8:41 remaining. With Dart out, the Wilson-led offense struggled, committing two penalties and running the ball three times before ultimately having to punt.

Chicago responded with a nine-play, 91-yard touchdown drive, jump-started by a 20-yard pass from Caleb Williams to tight end Colston Loveland on a critical third-and-10 at the Bears’ 26-yard line. The Giants’ defense continued to falter, allowing an 18-yard first-down completion to wide receiver Rome Odunze, followed by a 29-yard scramble from Williams that brought the Bears down to the 2-yard line.

Williams connected with Odunze again for the touchdown, cutting the lead to 20-17.

The Giants’ offense quickly stalled with a three-and-out sequence that saw Wilson get sacked twice. The punt that followed, by Jamie Gillan, was a shank — a 26-yard kick that gave the Bears excellent field position at the 47-yard line with just 2:53 left in the game.

Four plays and 1:06 later, Williams dashed 18 yards for the game-winning touchdown, sealing Daboll’s fate.

In their final possession, the Giants managed only 11 yards on six plays in the 24-20 loss.

Sunday’s defeat marked the fourth time this season that the Giants blew a double-digit lead, with all such collapses happening on the road. The other blown leads occurred in Week 2 against the Cowboys, Week 5 against the Saints, and Week 7 against the Broncos.
