Arsene Wenger issues warning as he responds to Mikel Arteta confirming that Arsenal use AI for tactics

Legendary Premier League manager Arsene Wenger has issued a warning to Mikel Arteta following the Arsenal coach’s recent admission of using AI-powered technology to aid his tactical decisions after the Sunderland draw.

The Frenchman acknowledges the benefits of technological tools in football but cautions that managers should not become overly reliant on them. Wenger stressed the importance of maintaining a coach’s instinct and personal judgment, even when artificial intelligence recommends something different.

“AI has a fantastic quality—it can absorb millions of different situations and give you an answer in a fraction of a second,” Wenger explained. “But the personality of a coach might say that the suggested answer is wrong. As long as the human being keeps control, authority, and power to make the decision, you can use any scientific tool. What’s dangerous is if science starts to dominate the decisions.”

Wenger’s concerns about over-reliance on AI technology come as more managers admit to using these tools to enhance their tactical approaches. Earlier this season, Seattle Reign coach Laura Harvey confirmed she uses ChatGPT in her tactical preparations for NWSL matches.

## Arteta Embraces AI for Arsenal Tactics

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta spoke candidly about his use of AI tools ahead of the Sunderland game, saying that these technologies offer valuable insights and a deeper understanding of the game.

“It’s already in use for many processes that help not only a football team but the whole organization. It will improve and give us good insights, or at least things to consider,” Arteta said. “I’m not an expert, but it’s a valuable tool.”

Arteta further explained, “We have developed certain things that, in our opinion, can help us understand ourselves better and evaluate what we do and how we can improve. We’ll continue exploring AI in many other areas of the club.”

## Arsenal’s Current Form

Despite not having won a trophy in five seasons, Arsenal currently sit atop the Premier League table with 26 points from 11 matches. The Gunners have finished second in the last three Premier League seasons—twice behind Manchester City and once behind Liverpool—and are aiming to break their trophy drought.
