Square Enix confirms layoffs & studio closures as it restructures its Western business

Square Enix has confirmed upcoming layoffs and office closures as part of a new restructuring effort focusing on its US and other Western businesses.

Although rumors about potential layoffs in Western offices had been circulating for some time, the company recently confirmed these plans through a financial presentation posted on its investor relations website. This presentation outlines the intent to reduce its overseas presence and re-prioritize resources back to its core business operations in Japan.

Western operations at Square Enix have been declining for quite a while. In 2022, the company sold off several of its Western studios, including Crystal Dynamics, Eidos, and Square Enix Montreal. This streamlining reflects a broader strategy to concentrate efforts on the home market and key projects.

Additionally, Square Enix has previously shifted its approach from developing exclusive titles to focusing on multiplatform releases. This change came after the initial slow sales of *Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth*, prompting the company to adapt its priorities to better meet market demands.

As Square Enix restructures once again, it remains to be seen how this renewed focus on Japan and scaling back in Western markets will impact its future projects and global presence.
